“Doctor to the Barrio” volunteer shot dead by unidentified assailants in Lanao

MANILA, Philippines – A volunteer for the government’s ‘Doctor to the Barrio’ program was shot and killed by still unknown assailants on Wednesday, March 1, in Lanao Del Norte. The victim has been identified as Dr. Dreyfuss “Toto” Perlas, a University of the Philippines (BS Biology) and Western Visayas State University (Medicine) graduate.

He is a member of the 30th batch of the ‘Doctor to the Barrio’. Perlas was shot dead while riding a motorcycle around 7:00 pm on the way from a medical mission in Sapad town heading to Barangay Maranding, Lala where he was staying in a rented house. Colleagues, friends and netizens mourn the death of a dedicated volunteer and appeals to the authorities to bring the perpetrator/s to justice. “Justice for our colleague in the medical profession. Such a waste of precious life of a doctor who, according to people close to him, is very dedicated in his work and is well-loved by the community he serves,” said one netizen. “Whoever you are… Why would you kill someone who dedicated his life to help others? This is such a depressing news. You did not just kill one life. You killed an entire community,” added another. Police are still investigating the motive and the suspects behind the ruthless murder.
