20-year-old Education student of Zamboanga

Erica Jean Rosal, the Education student who was found dead on January 6, at a bypass road in Zamboanga City had been laid to rest on January 16 in Mampang, but to date justice has not been served. Thousands lined the streets and attended the final rites for the 20-year-old Education student of Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST) whose case remains unsolved as suspects to the gruesome rape-slay still remain at large, except for one. The hapless victim had asked for permission from her parents to work on a thesis together with her classmates at Barangay Baliwasan on January 5. She was last seen with three men and were purportedly on their way to Barangay Lunzura. However, she was found lifeless the following day and without her undergarments.

On January 12, a suspect was nabbed in his residence during a follow-up operation, as per reports, after he was identified by a driver as among the four persons (three males and the victim) who boarded his tricycle around 9:30 p.m. of January 5 in a shopping mall. The suspect, only 22 years old and a resident of Sitio Luyahan in the village of Pasonanca, Zamboanga City, was reportedly named by Chief Inspector Arlan Delumpines, Police Station 5 chief as the man identified by the witness/tricycle driver who allegedly approached him for a ride and also called on his companions. The driver reportedly also said to the authorities that the suspect took the backride. Emedia Mo on Facebook shared a video covering the arrest of the first suspect as per the tricycle driver’s testimony. However, the family and the girlfriend of the nabbed suspect reportedly became emotional over the man’s alleged involvement in the killing of Rosal, and attested that the suspect was not guilty and is not capable of such a crime, as per a Bombo Radyo report. Investigation is still ongoing as per the Divisoria Police team’s latest update via Emedia Mo as two others have yet to be identified as among those who were last seen with the victim. Meanwhile, the family and friends of Rosal continue to clamor for justice to be served soon.
