Long weekend coming: Palace places additional holidays after Christmas, New Year

onger Christmas and New Year celebrations are coming! The Malacañang Palace has just placed two additional holidays after Christmas and after New Year. In an article written by Yuji Vincent Gonzales of Inquirer, it was disclosed that the Palace has declared December 26, 2016 and January 2, 2017 as special non-working days in the country. The declaration was made through Proclamation No. 117, which was released on Wednesday, December 14. Signed by Acting Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra, the declaration of two more additional holidays aims to give the people full opportunity to celebrate the holidays with their loved ones.

“The declaration of 26 December 2016 and 2 January 2017, both falling on a Monday, as special (non-working) days will give the people full opportunity to celebrate the holidays with their families and loved ones,” the proclamation stated. It added that the additional holidays will also promote domestic tourism. “A longer weekend promotes domestic tourism and enables employers to plan their work schedules effectively and efficiently, resulting in improved productivity,” the proclamation noted. Meanwhile, the Palace also directed the Department of Labor and Employment to issue the appropriate circular to implement the proclamation for the private sector.
