27 hurt, 2 in critical condition, during Hilongos town fiesta blast

The town fiesta in Hilongos, Leyte, which was supposed to be a happy celebration, had turned into a tragedy after an explosion occurred; leaving 27 people injured, including two people in critical condition. It was disclosed that 27 people were hurt in a blast in the town plaza of Hilongos, Leyte, past 9 p.m. of Wednesday, December 28. Initial reports reaching Leyte Governor Dominico Petilla disclosed that a boxing event was currently taking place as part of the town’s fiesta celebration when something exploded. There are also reports that two improvised explosive devices (IED) exploded in succession at different parts of the plaza.

Visayas State University student Ritchmon Relente, who even took a photo of the crowd watching the boxing match before the blast, said the first explosion took place right ahead of the announcement of winner of the match. Then, after about 10 to 15 seconds, the second explosion occurred. Meanwhile, a Facebook user from Leyte shared the two different stories about the explosion. “Mishap that happened in Hilongos Leyte 45 km from Baybay City Leyte at 9:00 p.m. was purely an accident when an overloaded transformer exploded. There was stampede…. However, I just had a talk over the phone to someone who was there he said there were two explosions and most likely it was bombing than just a transformer explosion [sic],” she wrote. Petilla’s office is still trying to verify reports that at least 10 people were killed. As of posting, the police are still conducting in-depth investigation to determine the perpetrators of the bombing and their motives.
