Hero’s burial for Marcos is final, says incoming president Duterte

President-elect Rodrigo Duterte says the late dictator Marcos Sr. deserves a hero’s burial since he was once a soldier Duterte believes a hero’s burial for Marcos Sr. can be arranged immediately Online petitioners have asked the incoming president to rethink his decision on granting a hero’s burial to Marcos Sr.

DAVAO CITY – President-elect Rodrigo Duterte defended last Thursday his decision to grant a hero’s burial for the late Ferdinand E. Marcos to the Libingan ng mga Bayani; arguing that the late president deserve it because he was once a soldier. In a published article of Aries Joseph Hegina via Inquirer, Duterte said that while he accepts the proposition that Marcos might not really be a hero, he said the late president has been a soldier. He believes the sins of the late president should not be blamed on his family.

In an earlier press conference, Duterte said the burial of the late President Marcos can be arranged immediately. He admitted that his move to grant the request of the Marcos family may disgust many who believe Marcos does not deserve to be treated as a hero, as written by Pia Ranada of Rappler. Duterte added that the issue of the burial of the late Marcos has created rifts among the Filipino people. But the incoming president defended his stance; saying that granting a hero’s burial to the late dictator would at least erase one hatred in the Philippines.

As for the Martial Law victims, the tough-talking presumptive president has asked them to ask the courts for the immediate release of their compensation.

While Duterte is pushing for a hero’s burial, thousands of Filipinos think otherwise, and has instead asked the incoming president to rethink his decision. In Erik Tenedero’s write-up on ABS-CBN, a petition on Change.org has been circulating uttering opposition to the idea of Marcos being buried at the Heroes’ Cemetery.

The petition states that burying Marcos, alongside the nation’s heroes, would be an insult to the thousands of lives tortured and murdered during the Martial Law.

Marcos ruled the country since 1965 before he was ousted through people power in 1986. Since his death in 1989, the family of the late dictator has demanded a hero’s burial for him; mentioning the achievements of Marcos Sr. as a soldier and a president.
