‘Binay has changed a lot’ PNoy tells Makati residents

President Benigno Simeon Aquino III told the residents of Makati City that their former mayor, now Vice President Jejomar “Jojo” Binay, has changed a lot since the two of them became friends during the Marcos regime. In an article written by Kathrina Charmaine Alvarez for GMA News Online on April 8, 2016, it was disclosed that the country’s chief executive spoke negatively about his next-in-command during a campaign sortie of Liberal Party (LP) standard-bearer Manuel “Mar” Roxas II in the city that was controlled by the Binays since 1986.

“Napakalinaw noong mga panahong iyon kung sino si Jejomar Binay. Ngayon, ang tanong: Saan na kaya napunta ang nakilala kong Jejomar Binay noon? [It was very clear during that time who Jejomar Binay was. Now, the question is: Where’s the Jejomar Binay that I used to know?],” Aquino said. Binay, who was appointed by former President Corazon Aquino as the officer-in-charge of Makati City during her administration, is currently facing a number of allegations related to graft and corruption; including the anomalous construction of Makati City Hall Building II and the overpriced birthday cakes distributed to senior citizens.

“Isa itong malakas na bumanat sa aking kandidato. 2014 pa lang po, may alegasyon pala ng katiwalian. Ako lang ba ang nag-aabang ng malinaw na sagot mula sa taong ito, na isa sa mga naghahangad na maging Pangulo ng Pilipinas? [He is one of those who speak negatively about my candidate. Since 2014, there have already been allegations against him. Am I the only one waiting for a clear answer from him who desires to be the president of the Philippines?],” Aquino said.

The president has endorsed the candidacy of former Vice Mayor Romulo “Kid” Peña, who is now serving as the acting mayor of Makati City after Binay’s son, Jejomar “Junjun” Binay, was removed from his position as city mayor by the Sandiganbayan due to graft charges.

According to Aquino, Makati was already able to save money when Peña assumed the administration of the city from the Binays since the cakes given to senior citizens are now cheaper than those that were previously distributed.

“Sa cake pa lang po umasenso na kayo kay Kid Peña. Marami pa ho yatang ibang larangan na pwede kayong umasenso [With just the cakes, you already went better with Kid Peña. I think you can also become successful in different aspects],” the president told Makati residents.
