FEU crowned UAAP Season 78 champions

Far Eastern University survived a furious finish to turn back University of Santo Tomas, 67-62, to win the UAAP Season 78 men's basketball championship. The Tamaraws dug deep to make clutch plays and key defensive stops down the stretch to turn back the Growling Tigers' patented comeback and win their first UAAP men's basketball title since 2005. FEU's star trio of Mac Belo, Roger Pogoy, and Mike Tolomia led the way for FEU, which won the series opener but dropped Game Two to set up the deciding match. Belo finished with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Pogoy and Tolomia added 14 and 13 points, respectively, for the Tamaraws. Ed Daquioag led UST with 21 points, while Karim Abdul added 12. But Growling Tigers' main man Kevin Ferrer, who carried the squad to victory in Game Two, struggled with just six points in the final game.

Second half thriller FEU was firmly in control, 51-41, late in the third period when UST began its fightback to turn the second half of the game into a thriller. The Growling Tigers unleashed 16 straight points capped by a jumper by veteran guard Daquioag for a 57-51 lead midway through the final period. But instead of folding, the Tamaraws struck back, taking the lead, 61-60, with less than two minutes on a three-pointer by Pogoy. Tolomia followed that up with a strong drive for a 63-60 edge with a minute to go.

The Growling Tigers remained within striking distance, 64-62, down the stretch after free throws by Daquioag. But the Tamaraws prevented the Growling Tigers from scoring the rest of the way to hold on for the victory. With the championship win, FEU eased the pain of its runner-up finish in last season's finals. The same, however, could not be said for UST, which has now finished runner-up in three of the last four seasons of the UAAP. - See more at: http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/546527/sports/basketball/feu-survives-ust-to-end-10-year-uaap-title-drought#sthash.ChzaokHE.dpuf
