Gilas Pilipinas off to China for FIBA Asia Championship

Members of the Gilas Pilipinas or Philippine national men’s basketball team departed for China on Monday, just two days before doing battle in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship this week. Gilas Pilipinas will try to win the tournament to qualify outright for the 2016 Rio Olympics, a stage the country hasn’t reached since 1972.

Members of the squad competing in the Olympic qualifier are naturalized player Andray Blatche, Jayson Castro, Terrence Romeo, Dondon Hontiveros, JC Intal, Matt Ganuelas-Rosser, Marc Pingris, Ranidel De Ocampo, Asi Taulava, Sonny Thoss, Calvin Abueva and Gabe Norwood. They will be headed by Gilas Pilipinas coach Tab Baldwin which trained the team for more than a month. Leading to the FIBA Asia tournament, the Filipinos competed in a pocket tournament in Estonia, the William Jones Cup in Taiwan where they won silver, and the inaugural MVP Cup in Manila where they clinched the title. Gilas Pilipinas will start its campaign on Wednesday against Palestine. The team will then face Hong Kong on Thursday and Kuwait on Friday to round up its assignments in the light bracket.
