12 million Tweets For AlDub's Romantic Date

Lola Nidora finally gave her go-ahead for the first real solo date of Alden Richards and YayaDub (Maine Mendoza), the AlDub nation went wild. Imagine the reaction when the first date happened on Sept. 19, a day the Aldub nation had been waiting for for the last two months. The Aldub nation pushed Twitter tweets for the day to an astounding 12.1 million by midnight for #ALDUBMostAwaitedDate. “The Kalye Serye is really a gift from God. No one can take credit for how it started,” says Joey de Leon in an interview. “But there are miracles, and I believe this is one of them.” De Leon is quick to acknowledge the contributions of Bayola, Jose Manalo (Lola Tidora) and Paolo Ballesteros (Lola Tinidora) for making the show a hit.

“They are veteran comedians,” Joey De Leon said. “Wally and Jose have gone through a lot in life and it is from these experiences that they draw the lessons they share on the Kalye Serye.” Every week, from Monday to Saturday, viewers are glued to their TV sets in anticipation of the plot’s twists and turns for the day. But the real difference lies in how the Aldub nation expresses itself in social media, a barometer of the pulse of the nation. Tweets, for instance, showed just how many Pinoys were glued to the visit of Pope Francis last January.

Then, we see how many netizens turn to Twitter and use its hashtags to let the government know how they feel about issues of the day. A breakdown of Twitter stats showed that on Sept. 12, a record 6.37 million tweets were made for the second in-the-flesh meeting of Alden and YayaDub. “It is the fans that have made this show what it is,” said De Leon. “We read the posts on Twitter and take some of their suggestions as to how a story may develop for the day.”
Eat Bulaga has made itself relevant by recreating itself to cater to its younger and social media-savvy fans – after 36 years. Much credit should be given to Vic Sotto, Joey de Leon and Tito Sotto, the three stalwarts of the show who have never ceased to amaze the public.
“We enjoy watching the show,” added De Leon. “The truth is that there is just an outline for the episode of the day and it is up to the cast to act it out. In truth, kinikilig din kami (we are tickled pink) and are in awe of the way Wally, Jose, Paolo, YayaDub and Alden are able to carry the show.”
