7.8 Magnitude quake hits Japan

A devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit Japan at exactly 7:23 PM of May 30, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said further reporting that the quake’s estimated epicenter was at 189 km west-northwest of Chichi-sima. But the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 8.5. Based on a separate report, the earthquake was felt widely in Japan but allegedly occurred at a depth of 590 km. Meanwhile, Tokyo Electric Power Co said there were no abnormalities at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant following the quake.

The runways at Tokyo’s Narita airport, on the other hand, were operating normally, but the high-speed bullet train service between Tokyo and Osaka was halted due to a power outage. Japan’s Meteorological Agency claimed there are no reports of serious damage or casualties and no tsunami warning has likewise been issued. Four years ago or March 11, 2011 to be exact, a magnitude-9 earthquake shook the northeastern part of Japan; unleashing a savage tsunami. The effects of the great earthquake were felt around the world; from Norway’s fjords to Antarctica’s ice sheet. Reports stated that tsunami debris continued to wash up on North American beaches two years later. To date, residents are still recovering from the disaster. Radioactive water was recently discovered leaking from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, which suffered a level 7 nuclear meltdown after the tsunami. Japan relies on nuclear power, and many of the country’s nuclear reactors remain closed because of stricter seismic safety standards since the earthquake. About 230,000 people who lost their homes because of the 2011 quake are reportedly still living in temporary housing. The Japanese government earlier stated that the total damages from the earthquake and tsunami was estimated at $300 billion dollars (about 25 trillion yen). Japan sits at the meeting place of four tectonic plates and experiences around 20 percent of the world’s most powerful earthquakes every year.
