Mary Jane Veloso’s recruiter “voluntarily surrenders” to Police

The recruiter who allegedly deceived Mary Jane Veloso into bringing 2.6 kilos of heroin landing her to be on the list of prisoners that will be punished by death, has reportedly surrendered to the authorities in Nueva Ecija on Tuesday, as reported by trendingpinas. Kristina Sergio, Veloso’s recruiter, voluntarily surrendered at the Nueva Ecija Police Provincial Office according to a radio report of DZBB. Veloso is among nine other drug traffickers who are being detained in isolation cells at an Indonesian maximum security prison, where all of them are awaiting execution by firing squad on Tuesday night.

A statement from Malacañang earlier said the Indonesian government has informed the Philippines that Veloso’s execution will push through. This is despite the personal appeal made by President Benigno Aquino III to Indonesian President Joko Widodo last Monday. “Following the meeting this (Monday) morning between the two presidents, President Widodo this evening instructed his Foreign Minister to convey to the Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs the final view of the Indonesian Attorney General that there is no basis to reconsider the death sentence; that the execution will need to be enforced,” the Palace said in a statement. With the recent development brought about by Sergio’s surrender, Laywer Edre Olalia, the secretary general of the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) said: “That’s the only moral thing to do. It might be the 11th hour but at least we have something to work on and for the president of Indonesia to take into serious account.” Olalia added that “the least that she (Sergio) can do is to declare categorically that Mary Jane is innocent.” The lawyer further explained, “If President Widodo still stands by his position, it will put to rest any remaining doubts about her innocence.” Sergio earlier denied the allegations against her, saying that the “truth” would come out regarding her involvement and would own up to the charges against her.
